Headshot of the mentor Chris Dowling

1. What problems and challenges does a business mentor work on?

A mentor helps and guides on many commercial situations and decision making, including – strategy, prices, operations, growth, sales and marketing and financial management.

2. I need a mentor and I've found one, but what happens next?

The mentor will give you a discovery/ introductory session, either in-person or online; this is usually free of charge. The mentor will want to know your situation, the issues and challenges in your business and your aims and objectives. The session will be private and confidential.

3. What happens about contact with the mentor between sessions?

Mentors should always be available to their clients to help, guide and support. Quick phone calls, prompt replies to emails and availability for in-person meetings should be all part of the service.

4. How does a mentor help with business development?

Business mentors play a key role in business development. Mentors have extensive and in-depth experience and knowledge – ‘they have been there and done it’. They provide advice and support on growth, new markets, opportunities and avoiding the pitfalls and problems.

5. What is the difference between a business mentor and a consultant?

Mentors provide advice and support, whereas consultants provide specific solutions.  Mentors provide guidance and support based on their own personal experience acquired over many years. Their journey helps business owners with their challenges, both positive and negative.  Consultants are usually used to providing specific expertise to solve specific problems.

6. Is a mentor a trusted adviser?

Yes, that’s exactly what mentoring is about. It is difficult for a business owner to find a trusted adviser. However, find a mentor and an owner has what they need for them and their business – a sounding board, critical friend and the benefit of a second pair of eyes looking at their business.

7. Will a business mentor provide accountability?

One of the most important roles of a mentor is to provide accountability. Regular check ins, monthly reviews, conversations about issues and constructive and effective feedback will help business owners focus on their objectives and help them achieve success they want.
